We present you the Copper Cabinet by David Derksen as the best furniture this week. The Copper Cabinet is a fragile cabinet for storing precious belongings. It is completely constructed out of 0,1-millimetre thick copper foil.
The bends in the material give the structure its stiffness and almost a paper like an appearance. You feel and see that the cabinet should be handled carefully, just like its contents.
You can see also a few more designs from David, such as his amazing Copper light pendants.
Nature, and especially the principles and processes that are found in nature are David Derksen’s main sources of inspiration. This results in a strong focus on materials, how they behave and how they can be constructed. According to David Derksen, creating objects is like playing with the forces of nature on scale. In his designs, he tries to express the beauty of the material and the way it is produced.
He graduated in 2009 at the Design Academy Eindhoven and completed his MSc degree in 2011 at Industrial Design TU Delft. The studio is based in Rotterdam. Currently he is a guest teacher Product Design at Willem de Kooning Academy and initiator of a collective workspace in Rotterdam, housing approximately 20 studio’s.
In 2015, David Derksen was selected for the Young Designer Award, as part of the Dutch Design Awards.
