Unique Designs: Alato Cabinet by Socharoentham and Vijaykadga

On this week’s Unique Designs, we share with you the Alato Cabinet, designed by students Jumphol Socharoentham and Pakawat Vijaykadga for their final project in furniture design at KMITL – King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang in Thailand, with a focus on wood and craftsmanship.

Alato is made from solid ash, ash veneer, MDF board and metal with spray paint and powder coat finish.

This wooden color-gradient cabinet created from their interest in craftsmanship works and the need to use the invention of the woodwork to be the point of this project. In creating this cabinet they took their inspiration from feathers for their even form, layers, shading and the colors and applied similar concepts in their design.

The weaving ash veneer through vertical wooden rods, a shingle effect begins to take shape. To play up the layered look, they sprayed the veneer with paint in different intensities, which resulted in a bold, gradient finish, much like fish scales.

“Beginning as both of us interested in craftsmanship works and need to use the invention of the woodwork to be the point of this project. We choose the feathers to be as our inspiration for design because we saw the configuration that we can use it for design, even form, layers, shading and also the colorful.” – Jumphol Socharoentham and Pakawat Vijaykadga.
